5, 8, 12 or 18? A Guide to Sipping El Supremo Rum

Four bottles. Four age statements. And one question we hear at every tasting: where do I start?

Every El Supremo begins the same way, with sugarcane honey from hand-cut Paraguayan cane, aged first in Incienso Marrón and finished in French oak. What changes is time. And time changes everything in the glass.

This guide shows you how to sip rum properly, then walks you through the 5, 8, 12 and 18 Year Old. That way, you can find the one that fits your taste, your moment, or your next night in.

How to Sip Rum Like You Mean It

Good rum deserves more than a quick shot. A few small habits make a big difference.

  • Pick the right glass. A tulip-shaped nosing glass or a small tumbler works best. The narrower rim gathers the aroma, so you can actually smell it.

  • Pour a small measure. Around 30ml is plenty. You want room to swirl.

  • Serve it at room temperature. Too cold, and the flavours stay locked in. If you prefer it chilled, use one large ice cube so it melts slowly.

  • Nose it first. Hold the glass slightly away from your face and breathe gently. Then move closer. You'll pick up more with each pass.

  • Start with a small sip. Let it coat your palate before you swallow. The first sip wakes up your taste buds. The second is where the flavour opens up.

  • Try a few drops of water. It sounds strange, but a little water can soften the alcohol and bring out gentler notes.

Most importantly, slow down. That's the whole point.

Start Here: The 5 Year Old and 8 Year Old

El Supremo 5 Year Old

The youngest in the range, and the liveliest. On the nose, you'll find honey and bitter chocolate. The palate is supple and delicate, with toffee, spice and a crack of black pepper. It finishes warm and peppery, with a touch of vanilla sweetness.

Best for: first-time rum sippers, and anyone who loves a cocktail with backbone. Try it in a Supremo 5 or an Old Cuban Supremo from our cocktail recipes.

El Supremo 8 Year Old

A medium-bodied, dark amber rum with more depth. The nose is spicy and sweet, with cinnamon, clove and a hint of wood. On the palate, it turns dry, with cocoa, caramel and a distinct mineral note. The finish is long and supple, much like a cup of spiced hot cocoa.

Best for: sipping neat after dinner, or as the base of a richer, spirit-forward cocktail. It also took home a medal at the London Spirits Competition in 2023.

Go Deeper: The 12 Year Old and 18 Year Old

El Supremo 12 Year Old

Mahogany-brown and made for connoisseurs. Cloves, cinnamon and vanilla lead on the nose, followed by a polished wood note that feels like stepping into an old library. The palate is sweet and wood-forward, with butterscotch, burnt honey and a touch of milk chocolate. Meanwhile, black coffee, vanilla and crème caramel linger long after the last sip.

Best for: neat or lightly chilled, on a slow evening. It's also our most awarded expression, with honours from the International Wine & Spirit Competition and the International Spirits Challenge.

El Supremo 18 Year Old

Our oldest and most complex rum. Full-bodied and dark amber, it opens with dried apricot, cherry and roasted tea, layered with oak and dark chocolate. The palate is velvety, as sweet dried fruit and rich oak move into caramel and honeycomb. Finally, a long finish of dark chocolate, espresso and leather, with one last hint of honey.

Best for: contemplative sipping. Pour it neat, put your phone down, and give it time. This is the bottle for milestones.

Same Roots, Different Stories

Every El Supremo is static-aged and never blended away. As a result, each batch carries its own single-origin character from the jungles of Paraguay. The 5 Year Old is where the story starts. The 18 Year Old is where it runs deepest.

Wherever you begin, sip slowly. After all, that's how it was made.
